Fri Nov 21 19:20:00 UTC 2025: Giants Acquire Outfielder Joey Wiemer, Designate Catcher Andrew Knizner

San Francisco, CA – The San Francisco Giants have acquired outfielder Joey Wiemer from the Miami Marlins in exchange for cash, the team announced today. To make room on the roster, the Giants have designated catcher Andrew Knizner for assignment.

Wiemer, 26, was previously a top prospect but has bounced around the league in recent years. After being designated for assignment by the Marlins, the Giants swooped in, hoping to unlock the potential that once made him a highly-regarded prospect.

Wiemer has shown flashes of power, particularly against left-handed pitching, and is considered a strong defensive outfielder capable of playing all three positions. However, his overall offensive production has been underwhelming, with a career .205/.279/.359 batting line in the majors.

The Giants are hoping a change of scenery and focused coaching can help Wiemer develop into a valuable contributor. He is out of minor league options, meaning he will need to make the major league roster out of spring training or risk being designated for assignment again. He potentially could platoon with Drew Gilbert.

In a corresponding move, the Giants designated Andrew Knizner for assignment. Knizner, 30, was projected to earn $1.3 million in arbitration next season but struggled offensively this year, hitting .221 with a .299 OBP in 88 plate appearances. The Giants now have a week to trade Knizner, otherwise he will become a free agent.
