NEW DELHI – November 22, 2025: St. Columba’s School in Delhi is facing intense scrutiny following the suicide of a 16-year-old student on November 19th. The Delhi Police have launched an investigation, collecting a week’s worth of CCTV footage and interrogating classmates, after a suicide note implicating teachers in “mental harassment” surfaced.
Parents and students held protests outside the Ashok Place school near Gole Market. Police have registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against three teachers and the headmistress, all of whom have been temporarily suspended and summoned for questioning.
The National Human Rights Commission of India (NHRC) has taken cognizance of the matter, issuing a notice to the District Magistrate and Deputy Commissioner of Police, demanding a probe and an action taken report within 10 days.
Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood has expressed his concern as a “parent” and announced the formation of an inquiry committee. He emphasized the government’s commitment to the mental well-being of students and pledged to ensure schools comply with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)’s directives on psychological support.
Sood plans to request reports from all Delhi schools detailing their compliance with the CBSE’s 2020 manual on mental health, designed to foster coping skills and create supportive school environments. The manual stresses the importance of counselors, special educators, and teacher well-being in supporting student mental health.
This tragic incident has sparked a wider conversation about mental health support in schools and the need for stricter adherence to existing guidelines.
