UNICEF: Palestinian Children Continue to Die in Gaza Despite Ceasefire

Geneva – UNICEF has reported that at least 67 Palestinian children have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas went into effect last month. Speaking at a press conference Friday, UNICEF spokesperson Ricardo Pires highlighted that a baby girl was among those killed in an Israeli airstrike in Khan Younis on Thursday. Seven other children were killed a day earlier during a wave of Israeli attacks across Gaza.

Pires stated, “This is during an agreed ceasefire. The pattern is staggering.” He emphasized that each child’s death represented a life cut short, not just a statistic.

The report comes amid accusations that Israel is using starvation as a weapon of war, leading to a severe humanitarian crisis and child deaths. Save the Children estimates that in 2024, an average of 475 Palestinian children per month have suffered lifelong disabilities due to the conflict. Gaza is described as home to the largest cohort of child amputees in modern history.

The recent Israeli airstrikes were reportedly in response to an incident involving gunfire targeting Israeli troops, a claim Hamas disputes. Doctors Without Borders (MSF) reported treating numerous women and children with severe injuries, including open fractures and gunshot wounds. Eyewitness accounts detail scenes of devastation and widespread suffering.

Beyond the direct violence, restrictions on humanitarian aid are exacerbating the crisis. Pires noted that many children are sleeping in the open, exposed to the elements, with inadequate shelter. He urged greater access for humanitarian assistance, stating that the world must not normalize the suffering of Gazan children. “There is no safe place for them.”
