Zelenskyy Considers US Peace Plan for Ukraine as European Allies Express Concerns
Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed Friday that his government is reviewing a peace proposal from the United States to end the ongoing war with Russia. This comes as Ukraine faces increased pressure from Washington and continued Russian military offensives.
Zelenskyy stated he discussed the US plan with French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in a joint call. He emphasized the need for a “real and dignified peace” and stated they are working to ensure Ukraine’s “principled stances are taken into account.”
While details remain officially unconfirmed, reports suggest the US proposal, allegedly spearheaded by the Trump administration, includes concessions to Russia, such as territorial cessions, limits on Ukraine’s military, and barring Ukraine from joining NATO. In exchange, sanctions on Russia would be lifted, and the country would be readmitted to the Group of Eight (G8).
Adding to the pressure, sources have indicated the US is threatening to curtail intelligence sharing and weapons supplies if Ukraine does not agree to the deal by next Thursday.
European allies, who were reportedly not consulted on the US plan, have expressed concerns. Germany stated the need to safeguard “vital European and Ukrainian interests.” While welcoming “US efforts” to end the war, Macron, Starmer, and Merz assured Zelenskyy of their “unwavering and full support for Ukraine on the path to a lasting and just peace.”
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas echoed those sentiments, stating that any agreement is ultimately for Ukraine to decide, and stressed that Russia has no legal right to concessions.
Meanwhile, fighting continues on the ground. A recent Russian missile attack on Ternopil resulted in at least 31 deaths, while Russia claims to have encircled thousands of Ukrainian soldiers in the Kharkiv region. Fighting also rages in Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has suggested that Ukraine’s losses on the battlefield should convince Zelenskyy to negotiate now.
The situation remains fluid, with Ukraine balancing the need for peace with concerns over potentially unfavorable terms dictated by the US proposal and ongoing military pressure from Russia.
