Fri Nov 21 01:40:00 UTC 2025: Headline: Miss Universe USA Multiverse? Five Contestants With U.S. Ties Spark Debate
Bangkok, Thailand – As the 2025 Miss Universe competition gears up in Bangkok, a hot topic is swirling through social media: why are five contestants with strong U.S. ties vying for the crown? The presence of Miss USA Alana Jones, Miss Latina Yamilex Hernández, Miss Ecuador Nadia Mejía, Miss Cuba Lina Luaces, and Miss Nicaragua Itza Castillo, all boasting connections to the United States, has ignited debate about fairness and the evolving definition of national representation in the pageant world.
Alana Jones represents the U.S. directly, while Yamilex Hernández, representing the Latina community of the U.S., was chosen through Telemundo’s reality show. Lina Luaces, Miami-born and representing Cuba, marks the island’s return after decades. Although crowned Miss Universe Nicaragua, Itza Castillo is based in Florida, and California-born Nadia Mejía represents Ecuador due to her heritage.
According to the Miss Universe Organization (MUO), contestants must be citizens, permanent residents, or have legal ties to the nation they represent, through lineage. Telemundo star Danilo Carrera compared it to the World Cup, where players represent their nationalized country or the country of their ancestors.
However, critics argue that a large U.S. presence, particularly those trained in U.S. pageant systems, may hold an unfair advantage. The hashtag “#MissUniverseUSAMultiverse” has even popped up on TikTok and Reddit, questioning the blurring lines between national representation and global branding.
Defenders, including former Miss Mexico and Miss Universe host Jaqueline Bracamontes, view it as a reflection of the modern diaspora. “Latinas born in the U.S. are just as Latina as anyone else,” she stated.
Pageant historians note this isn’t a new trend. Contestants representing Puerto Rico, Canada, and Australia have previously been born in the U.S. The debate underscores the complexities of nationality, heritage, and the increasingly global nature of beauty pageants in the 21st century. The pageant is expected to name its winner within the next few days.
