Hong Kong/Macau – The action thriller “The Shadow’s Edge,” starring Jackie Chan and Tony Leung Ka-fai, is making waves, raking in over £128 million at the box office. A Hong Kong-China co-production, the film draws inspiration from the acclaimed “Eye in the Sky” and its Korean adaptation, “Cold Eyes,” offering a modern twist on the surveillance thriller.
Chan plays Wong Tak-chong, a retired surveillance expert pulled back into action to investigate a series of heists in Macau. His adversary is Fu Lung-sang, known as “The Shadow,” played by Leung, reprising a similar role he originated in “Eye in the Sky.” Their cat-and-mouse game is ignited by the theft of HK$1.5 billion in cryptocurrency, which inadvertently reveals Fu’s identity.
The film updates the original story with contemporary themes, contrasting classic detective work with AI-driven tracking. When AI fails, Wong assembles a quirky team with childlike codenames to hunt down The Shadow. Fu, a former mercenary, trains his adopted sons in a dilapidated orphanage, turning them into skilled enforcers who challenge the police at every turn.
Despite his age, Chan performs his own stunts, showcasing his commitment to authentic martial arts. Leung’s performance as Fu is receiving high praise, capturing the character’s complex nature: a betrayed father and a ruthless killer. Zhang Zifeng adds a touch of softness as He Qiuguo, a young officer on Wong’s team. Newcomers Wen Junhui, Lin Qiunan, Zhou Zhengjie, and Li Zhekun add to the film’s dynamism.
The action choreography, led by Chan and Su Hang, provides an exhilarating spectacle. Cinematographer Qian Tiantian captures the high-octane chases and fight sequences with kinetic energy, utilizing both the CineAlta V2 and compact cameras like the FX3 for dynamic shots.
Set against the backdrop of Macau’s iconic landmarks, from its towering buildings to the Coloane landscapes, the film uses the city’s cultural properties and its reputation as a hub of crime and commerce to full effect. “The Shadow’s Edge” proves that star power, technical excellence, and a thrilling plot can still captivate audiences and generate box office success in today’s film market. As the saying goes, “The razor is already in your hand. Don’t hesitate.”
