MANGALURU, November 21, 2025 – The Union Ministry of Transport and Highways has officially transferred the Surathkal-Nanthoor-B. C. Road Port Connectivity Project to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), marking a significant step towards improved infrastructure in Dakshina Kannada. The project, which includes sections of NH 66 and NH 75, was previously managed by the New Mangalore Port Road Company Limited (NMPRCL).

The transfer, effective immediately, aims to address long-standing maintenance issues and facilitate necessary upgrades to this crucial road corridor. Dakshina Kannada Member of Parliament, Captain Brijesh Chowta, hailed the decision as a “transformation” for mobility and logistics efficiency in the region.

“This is a long-overdue step that will directly benefit commuters, businesses, and the port ecosystem,” stated Capt. Chowta.

The decision follows persistent advocacy by Capt. Chowta, who brought attention to the highway’s heavy traffic, frequent accident-prone areas (“black spots”), and inadequate drainage and service roads. He successfully secured initial funding of ₹28.58 crore for upgrades last year and continued to push for the complete transfer to NHAI.

According to an official memorandum, NHAI will now undertake immediate measures for strengthening maintenance and safety on the project highway. Plans are underway to invite a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to suggest long-term solutions for reducing congestion, enhancing safety, and addressing capacity augmentation requirements.

The NMPRCL will be wound up following due statutory process, with NHAI assuming financial liabilities as the promoter of NHLML. The move is expected to ensure priority, dedicated funding, and professional maintenance for one of Mangaluru’s most vital road corridors.
