PUDUCHERRY, INDIA – November 20, 2025: The Puducherry Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) has officially launched its first fleet of electric buses, marking a significant step towards environmentally friendly public transportation in the Union Territory. The new fleet includes both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned buses and will operate on 25 routes throughout the city and its suburbs.

This initiative aims to replace the aging diesel bus fleet with cleaner alternatives. The PRTC will be deploying the electric buses on routes connecting the main bus terminus to major educational institutions, including Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer), Pondicherry University, Puducherry Technological University, Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College, Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences, Tagore Government Arts College, Government Women’s Engineering College, and Christ Engineering College.

Transport Commissioner A.S. Sivakumar stated that the electric buses have already seen positive reception from the public. He emphasized the project’s benefits, noting that it will reduce pollution, improve urban mobility, and strengthen the public transport network in Puducherry. The PRTC expects the introduction of electric buses will make Puducherry a leader in sustainable public transport.
