Lake Naivasha, Kenya – Unprecedented flooding at Lake Naivasha has left thousands displaced and grappling with waist-high water, overflowing sanitation systems, and rising health risks, according to local officials and residents. The surging waters, which have advanced approximately 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) inland, have submerged hundreds of homes, churches, and even police stations in the Kihoto district.

“It hasn’t happened like this before,” said Rose Alero, a 51-year-old resident whose home is inundated. “People are suffering.”

Nakuru County’s disaster risk management head, Joyce Cheche, estimates that 7,000 people have been displaced by the rising waters. Evacuations have been carried out using everything from tourist boats to improvised rafts, as seen when children were rescued from a flooded school.

The flooding is not only impacting communities but also posing a threat to the local economy and wildlife. The crucial flower export sector is experiencing worker absenteeism due to fears of cholera and landslides, while encounters with the lake’s hippos pose a significant danger.

County officials have provided transport assistance and implemented health measures, but financial compensation has yet to be offered.

The cause of the drastic water level increase is debated. While numerous studies attribute it to increased rainfall driven by climate change, Kenyan geologist John Lagat points to tectonic activity as a primary factor. Lagat explained that the lake’s location along a major geological fault means that shifting tectonic plates have increasingly sealed underground outflows, trapping water. He acknowledges that increased rainfall and land degradation also contribute to the problem.

As residents brace for the upcoming rainy season, the future remains uncertain. “We are very worried,” Alero expressed, dreading what the next downpour might bring.
