MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – November 17, 2025 – Google today announced the launch of WeatherNext 2, a revolutionary AI-powered weather forecasting model promising significantly faster, more accurate, and higher-resolution predictions than ever before. The new model, developed by Google DeepMind and Google Research, generates hundreds of potential weather scenarios in under a minute, offering a significant leap forward in forecasting capabilities.
WeatherNext 2 boasts the ability to produce forecasts eight times faster than its predecessor and offer hourly resolution. This enhanced performance is attributed to a novel AI modeling approach called Functional Generative Network (FGN), enabling the model to predict not just individual weather elements but also complex, interconnected systems like heatwaves and wind farm power output.
“The weather affects important decisions we make everyday,” the company stated in a press release. “WeatherNext 2 can predict hundreds of possible weather outcomes from a single starting point. Each prediction takes less than a minute on a single TPU; it would take hours on a supercomputer using physics-based models.”
According to Google, WeatherNext 2 surpasses the previous state-of-the-art WeatherNext model on 99.9% of variables and lead times, from temperature to humidity across 0-15 days. This will translate to more useful and precise forecasts for a variety of applications, from optimizing global supply chains and flight paths to informing daily commutes.
Google is making WeatherNext 2 forecast data accessible through Earth Engine and BigQuery. An early access program is also being launched on Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform for custom model inference, allowing users to leverage the technology for their specific needs.
The new technology has already been integrated into Google Search, Gemini, Pixel Weather, and Google Maps Platform’s Weather API. In the coming weeks, WeatherNext 2 will also power weather information in Google Maps.
Looking ahead, Google plans to continue developing WeatherNext 2 by integrating new data sources and expanding access. The company hopes to accelerate scientific discovery and empower a global ecosystem of researchers, developers, and businesses to build for the future.
In addition to the WeatherNext 2 launch, Google announced new funding for a regional Data Commons for Africa, further demonstrating its commitment to leveraging technology for global benefit.
