Man Arrested After Harassing Solo Female Traveler in Sri Lanka

Colombo, Sri Lanka – A 23-year-old man has been arrested in Sri Lanka after allegedly harassing and indecently exposing himself to a solo female traveler from New Zealand. The incident, which was captured in a video posted to the traveler’s Instagram account, has gone viral, sparking outrage and discussions about the safety of solo female travel.

The incident occurred on the woman’s fourth day of exploring Sri Lanka via tuk-tuk (auto rickshaw). According to her account and video footage, a man on a scooter began following her, repeatedly passing her and then slowing down. He then asked her for sex before exposing himself.

Visibly shaken, the traveler drove away and later posted about the experience, expressing her shock and anger. “I could not believe he asked me that question, and after I said no, he still had the audacity to expose himself to me like that,” she wrote.

Despite the distressing encounter, the woman emphasized that the incident was isolated and does not represent the country as a whole. “I want to be clear: this does not define Sri Lanka,” she stated in her caption. “The local people I met were some of the kindest and most generous I’ve ever encountered. This was one man, one moment – not a reflection of an entire country.”

The traveler also reflected on the challenges faced by women traveling alone. “Solo travelling is incredible, but it’s not always sunshine and smiles. Some days test your strength and remind you to stay alert,” she wrote.
