New York, NY – As Dick Van Dyke approaches his 100th birthday on December 13th, the legendary actor shows no signs of slowing down, expressing his enduring love for acting and a continued desire to work. In an exclusive interview with TODAY’s Al Roker, Van Dyke, whose latest book “100 Rules for Living to 100: An Optimist’s Guide to a Happy Life” hits shelves November 18th, shared insights into his remarkable career and his secrets to a long and joyful life.

Van Dyke attributes his decades-long success to an inherently optimistic outlook. He reminisced about his early career beginnings, highlighting his role in “Bye Bye Birdie” alongside Chita Rivera, who he credits with teaching him how to sing and dance. The Broadway hit paved the way for his iconic television series, “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” and his unforgettable portrayal of Bert in Disney’s “Mary Poppins.”

From his signature dance with animated penguins in “Mary Poppins” to his role in “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” Van Dyke has consistently charmed audiences worldwide. He expressed his delight at the ongoing love and recognition he receives, even from the likes of Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Al Pacino, and Michelle Obama.

Looking back on his 75-year career, Van Dyke expressed gratitude for the opportunity to do what he loves. He revealed some regrets, including turning down the role of James Bond and a potential collaboration with Cary Grant. Despite these missed opportunities, Van Dyke remains focused on the future, revealing his ambition to play Ebenezer Scrooge, adding that he still has time to make the dream a reality.

He emphasized the importance of staying active and credits his wife, Arlene Silver, with keeping him young through their shared love of singing and dancing.

As he reflects on his legacy, Van Dyke hopes to be remembered for his humor, compassion, and “zest for living.” As long as his beloved songs like “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and “Chim Chim Cher-ee” continue to be sung by generations to come, the actor says, the most important part of him will continue to live on.
