Bangladesh Warns Media Against Reporting Statements from Fugitive Ex-PM Hasina

New Delhi/Dhaka – November 18, 2025 – The interim government of Bangladesh has issued a stern warning to all media outlets, both print and online, cautioning them against publishing or broadcasting statements made by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is currently a fugitive residing in India. The National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) cited concerns over national security and public order as the reason for the directive.

In a press release issued on Monday, the NCSA stated that Hasina’s statements could incite violence, disorder, and criminal activity, potentially disrupting social harmony. They urged the media to act responsibly and refrain from disseminating any such material. The agency reminded media houses that publishing statements from convicted fugitives violates the Cyber Security Ordinance and that authorities have the power to block content deemed a threat to national security or public order.

The warning comes as Hasina was sentenced to death in absentia by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Monday for crimes against humanity related to the government’s crackdown on student protests last year. Former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal received the same sentence.

Hasina fled Bangladesh on August 5th last year following widespread protests and has since resided in India. Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Muhammad Yunus, praised the verdict, emphasizing that no one is above the law. However, Hasina has denounced the charges as politically motivated and the tribunal as biased.
