Claire Danes Returns to Emotional Extremis in Netflix’s “The Beast in Me”
NEW YORK, NY – Claire Danes, known for her intense portrayals of women on the brink, is back in her element in the new Netflix thriller, “The Beast in Me,” premiering Thursday. Danes plays Aggie Wiggs, a writer haunted by the death of her son and creatively blocked, who becomes fixated on her new neighbor, Nile Jarvis (Matthew Rhys), a wealthy man suspected of murdering his wife.
The eight-episode series, created by Gabe Rotter and developed by “Homeland” showrunner Howard Gordon, aims for psychological complexity, exploring themes of guilt, trauma, and the predator-prey dynamic. Jonathan Banks also stars as Jarvis’s father.
While the plot features convenient twists and potentially unsubtle social commentary, Danes’s performance as the troubled writer stands out, injecting humor and empathy into the character’s desperate attempts to reignite her career. Rhys, however, struggles to find depth in the thinly written role of the potentially sociopathic neighbor.
“The Beast in Me” will appeal to viewers who appreciate Danes’s commitment to emotionally demanding roles and are drawn to suspenseful mysteries with a psychological edge.
