Watanabe’s Triple Axel Leaps Ahead of Liu at Skate America, Eyes on Milano Cortina 2026
Lake Placid, NY – Japanese skater Rinka Watanabe edged out reigning world champion Alysa Liu at the Skate America 2025 women’s short program on Saturday, thanks to a stunning triple Axel. Watanabe’s score of 74.35 puts her just ahead of Liu’s 73.73, setting the stage for a thrilling free skate. Italy’s Lara Naki Gutmann currently sits in third place with 69.69.
Both skaters are vying for a spot at next month’s Grand Prix Final in Nagoya, Japan. Watanabe, the 2022 Skate Canada champion, is aiming for her second Grand Prix title, while Liu, making her Skate America debut, seeks her first.
Watanabe expressed satisfaction with her performance, stating, “I was able to put out what I do in practice, so I was happy with that…I want to put my foot down and make a difference [this season], and I think that triple Axel can help me do that.” Her triple Axel earned her an impressive 9.60 points.
Liu, skating to her “Promise” short program, which she intends to keep through the Olympics, acknowledged an under-rotation on her triple Lutz-triple loop combination. Despite the error, she seemed unfazed, focusing on the larger picture. “It always feels fresh…It’s pretty timeless,” she said of her program.
The event carries extra weight as both Watanabe and Liu are considered contenders for their respective countries’ Olympic teams for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games. Watanabe is part of a deep pool of talented Japanese women skaters all vying for one of three Olympic spots, while Liu is a front-runner for the U.S. alongside Amber Glenn.
The women’s free skate promises to be a high-stakes competition, with all eyes on Watanabe and Liu as they continue their journey towards the 2026 Winter Olympics.
