Sun Nov 16 20:00:00 UTC 2025: Falcons Coach Morris Defends Penix Jr. After Advice Comments Spark Controversy

ATLANTA, GA – Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris has vehemently defended rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. after comments the player made earlier this week regarding where he seeks advice sparked an unnecessary controversy.

During a Wednesday press conference, Penix, when asked where he turns for guidance, mentioned his fiancé and his “quarterback coaches back at home,” who offer tips on areas needing improvement. Some interpreted this as a slight to the Falcons’ coaching staff, given that he didn’t explicitly state he sought their input.

Morris dismissed the notion as a “joke” on Friday, calling out those who “stretch snippets” into more than they are. He stated that the organization is united when developing Penix.

“Stop looking for stuff on a young man,” Morris said, via Raimondi of ESPN.com. “I don’t want the kid having to deal with stuff that doesn’t matter or stuff that’s not real… Let his problems be his problems, like third downs. Let’s fix those. Don’t make up [a thing] that doesn’t exist.”

Penix Jr. declined to comment when given the chance to clarify his earlier statement on Friday, affirming that the organization understood his intentions.

Morris further elaborated that he and Penix have since laughed about the situation, and he clarified that Penix has access to a wealth of internal resources, including himself, offensive coordinator Zac Robinson, quarterbacks coach D.J. Williams, passing game coordinator/receivers coach T.J. Yates, and senior offensive assistant Ken Zampese. Furthermore, veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins also helps mentor Penix.

Williams emphasized that he communicates with Penix and the other quarterbacks more frequently than he speaks with his own children, and he hasn’t even addressed the supposedly controversial comments with Penix.

The Falcons are currently struggling with a 3-6 record, marked by inconsistent performances, and a loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday could all but extinguish their playoff hopes.
