Mumbai Grapples with CNG Shortage After Pipeline Damage
Mumbai, November 17, 2025 – Commuters in Mumbai and surrounding areas faced significant disruptions today as a major gas pipeline rupture triggered a widespread shortage of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). Long queues and temporary closures were reported at CNG stations across Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai, impacting public transportation and private CNG-powered vehicles.
The disruption, caused by third-party damage to a GAIL gas pipeline within the Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF) compound, has reduced pressure across the Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) network. MGL, the primary CNG supplier in the region, issued a statement acknowledging the issue and stating that work is underway to restore the damaged pipeline.
“Several CNG pumps have been non-functional since this morning due to low gas pressure,” said Chetan Modi, president of the Petrol Dealers Association (Mumbai). “We have been informed that efforts are being made to resume normal supply, but full restoration may take the entire day.”
The shortage has significantly impacted autorickshaws, taxis (including those operated by Ola and Uber), and school buses, forcing many to combine routes or remain off the roads. Anil Garg, a leader in the school bus operator’s body, confirmed that their operations have been severely affected.
MGL has prioritized the supply of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) to residential consumers and advised industrial and commercial users to switch to alternate fuels until the situation is resolved. While MGL regrets the inconvenience caused, no specific timeline for full restoration has been provided. Residents are advised to anticipate potential transportation delays throughout the day.
