Mon Nov 17 03:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Sirianni and Campbell: Surviving the 2021 NFL Coaching Purge

PHILADELPHIA, PA – In a league known for its rapid coaching turnover, Nick Sirianni of the Philadelphia Eagles and Dan Campbell of the Detroit Lions stand as exceptions. Hired in the 2021 coaching cycle, a year that saw seven new head coaches join the NFL, Sirianni and Campbell have not only survived but thrived, leading their teams into Week 15 as legitimate Super Bowl contenders.

This Sunday night, the two will face off at Lincoln Financial Field, a crucial matchup with significant playoff implications. The Eagles, currently the NFC’s top seed, look to maintain their position, while the Lions aim to close the gap and secure the conference’s top spot themselves.

“I know him through the owner’s meetings and seeing him at the combine, a lot of respect for him and what he’s done,” Sirianni said of Campbell on Friday. “Him and I were in the same era coming out in ’21 and got a lot of respect for how he runs his program.”

While Sirianni boasts a Super Bowl appearance and a championship win, along with a regular season record of 55-21 and 6-3 in the playoffs, Campbell (45-31-1, 2-2 in the playoffs) is seeking his first trip to the big game. The Eagles have historically had the upper hand in matchups with Campbell’s Lions, winning both previous encounters.

Their success stands in stark contrast to the fate of their 2021 coaching peers, including Robert Saleh (Jets), Brandon Staley (Chargers), David Culley (Texans), Art Smith (Falcons), and Urban Meyer (Jaguars), all of whom have been dismissed from their roles.

One key difference between the two coaches lies in play-calling. Sirianni relinquished play-calling duties early in his Eagles tenure, while Campbell recently took over play-calling for the Lions, resulting in an offensive explosion against the Commanders.

“I think anytime you change play callers, there’s going to be different tendencies of things that happen,” said Sirianni, acknowledging the impact of the change.

The Sunday night showdown promises to be a compelling contest between two coaches who have defied the odds and built successful programs. With playoff seeding on the line, the stakes are high as Sirianni and Campbell battle for supremacy.
