Tragedy Strikes Monterey Coast: Father and Daughter Die After Being Swept into Ocean by Rogue Wave

Monterey, CA – A father and his 7-year-old daughter are dead after being swept into the Pacific Ocean by a large wave near the Rocky Point Restaurant in Monterey County on Friday. Yuji Hu, 39, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and his daughter were caught by a 15-to-20-foot wave just before 1 p.m., according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.

Hu’s wife and mother of the child, whose name has not been released, was also briefly pulled into the water while trying to reach her family, but managed to make it back to shore unharmed, leaving behind their 2-year old child.

Emergency responders initially rescued Mr. Hu from the ocean and administered CPR. He was then transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A search was immediately launched for the missing girl.

On Sunday afternoon, a diver located the child’s body approximately 100 yards offshore, about half a mile north of where she was last seen. Monterey County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue assisted with the recovery.

The mother was hospitalized and treated for mild hypothermia. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident. Authorities are reminding visitors to be aware of the unpredictable nature of the ocean and the potential for dangerous wave conditions along the California coast.
