Bad Bunny Dominates Latin Grammys, Wins Album of the Year
LAS VEGAS – Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny was the big winner at the 26th annual Latin Grammy Awards in Las Vegas on Thursday, taking home five awards, including the coveted Album of the Year for his genre-bending album, “DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS.” Despite already possessing a dozen Latin Grammy trophies, this marks his first win in any of the show’s major categories.
The artist, born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, appeared genuinely surprised as he accepted the award, dedicating it to the youth of Latin America and Puerto Rico. “There are many ways to show patriotism and defend our land – we choose music,” he stated.
Bad Bunny also secured wins in the urban and reggaeton categories, setting the stage for a potentially successful awards season, as he is nominated for six Grammys, including Album of the Year, and will headline the Super Bowl halftime show in February.
Other major winners of the night included Karol G, who won Song of the Year for her merengue hit “Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido,” and Alejandro Sanz, who took home Record of the Year for his ballad “Palmeras En El Jardín.” Sanz humorously apologized to Bad Bunny upon accepting the award.
The Argentine duo CA7RIEL & Paco Amoroso also had a successful night, winning five awards in the pop, alternative, and music video categories for their album “Papota.” Mexican alt-pop singer Paloma Morphy won Best New Artist, while legacy artists like Gloria Estefan, Fito Páez, and Rubén Blades were also honored.
Brazilian soul singer Liniker, a previous history-maker, also shined, taking home three awards and delivering a memorable performance.
While the ceremony largely avoided political topics, Los Tigres del Norte addressed immigrant rights during their performance. Gloria and Emilio Estefan ended their acceptance speech with a tribute to the Latin diaspora, emphasizing their continued success around the world.
