Farooq Abdullah Calls for Investigation into “White Collar Terrorists,” Raises Concerns Over Kashmir Relations
Srinagar – Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah sparked controversy on Saturday with comments regarding the recent busting of a terror module in Haryana and the handling of explosives that led to a deadly blast in Srinagar.
Abdullah, head of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC), urged authorities to investigate the root causes that led a group of doctors to engage in terrorism. “Ask those who are responsible, why did these doctors have to take this path? What was the reason? There is a need for a thorough investigation and study of this,” he stated. The terror module was linked to a doctor, Umar Mohammad, who loaded a car with explosives and detonated it in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk, killing 13 people.
Abdullah also expressed concern about a possible repeat of “Operation Sindoor,” a past security initiative, following the terror module bust. He emphasized the need for improved relations between India and Pakistan, referencing former Prime Minister Vajpayee’s words that “friends can be changed, but neighbors cannot.” (It is worth noting, however, that many believe Pakistan betrayed Vajpayee’s trust with the Kargil War.)
The former Chief Minister was also critical of authorities’ handling of explosive material at a Srinagar police station, which resulted in the deaths of nine people on Friday night. “This is our mistake. Those who understand these explosives better should have spoken to them [officials] about how to deal with them, instead of trying to handle themselves,” Abdullah said. He lamented the continued suspicion towards Kashmiris and expressed hope for a future where they are fully accepted as Indians.
Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat stated that the blast occurred during mandated forensic procedures and dismissed speculation surrounding the incident. The explosives were recovered during raids on the terror module in Haryana.
