Sports Networks Rewrite the Rules to Land Superstar Talent: Jordan, Manning, and Brady Call the Shots
NEW YORK, NY – In a paradigm shift sweeping the sports media landscape, networks like NBC, ESPN, and Fox Sports are bending over backward to accommodate the unique demands of sports legends like Michael Jordan, Peyton Manning, and Tom Brady. Traditional roles and expectations are being tossed aside as these icons command unprecedented levels of control and flexibility in their broadcast deals.
NBC Sports made waves when it signed Michael Jordan as a “special contributor” for its NBA coverage. Instead of requiring the basketball icon to appear in-studio or at games, NBC sends announcer Mike Tirico to Jordan’s home for exclusive interview segments, dubbed “MJ: Insights to Excellence.” This arrangement highlights the lengths to which networks are going to secure Jordan’s involvement, after years of other networks failing to recruit him after he retired from the NBA in 2003.
ESPN took a similar tack with Peyton Manning. After the retired NFL quarterback declined a traditional Monday Night Football booth role, ESPN cultivated a relationship through his production company, Omaha Productions. This led to the creation of the Emmy-winning “Manningcast,” a remote, alternative broadcast featuring Peyton and his brother Eli, now in its fifth season.
Fox Sports made the biggest splash, signing Tom Brady to a staggering 10-year, $375 million contract. Recognizing Brady’s need for preparation, Fox even allowed him a “gap year” before his broadcast debut, which saw him calling the most-watched Super Bowl ever.
These moves reflect a new reality where star power trumps traditional structures. Networks are prioritizing access to these personalities, even if it means ceding control and adopting unconventional approaches.
“Any time you get Michael Jordan to do anything, it’s amazing,” said one sports TV executive. “You get what you get.”
Sam Smith, author of “The Jordan Rules” echoes the sentiment, adding that because Jordan has remained private since retiring from the sport “there’s been a mystique that’s grown about him.”
The willingness of these networks to adapt highlights the immense value placed on the unique perspectives and drawing power of these iconic athletes.
