Delhi Protests: Citizens Demand Action on Air Pollution, Object to Street Dog Relocation

New Delhi, November 9, 2025 – Over a hundred citizens, including students, activists, and volunteers, gathered at India Gate in Delhi on Sunday to protest the city’s persistently poor air quality. Demonstrators chanted slogans and held signs demanding government action to combat the rising pollution levels. The protest, which lasted approximately two hours, was met with a heavy police presence, and 55 individuals were detained and transported to locations outside the city.

Protesters criticized the government’s handling of the pollution crisis, particularly the decision to allow firecrackers during Deepavali. They argued that the current model of development is “anti-people” as it fails to address the deteriorating air quality.

Simultaneously, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) convened to review Delhi’s pollution levels. Despite the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 391, categorized as “very poor,” the commission opted not to invoke Stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), citing a “consistent declining trend” in the hourly AQI.

Following the air pollution protest, many demonstrators remained to protest against a Supreme Court order on the relocation of street dogs. Concerns were raised about the lack of adequate shelters, funding, and the implementation of animal birth control rules by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
