Kolkata Pays Tribute to Guru Dutt on Birth Centenary at Film Festival

KOLKATA, November 10, 2025 – The 31st Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) is honoring the legacy of iconic Indian filmmaker Guru Dutt on his 100th birth anniversary with a talk and photographic exhibition.

The event, titled ‘Guru Dutt: The Melancholic Maverick’, took place on Sunday (November 9, 2025) and featured a panel discussion with film scholars, writers, and personalities including Shoma A Chatterji, Moinak Biswas, filmmaker Ramesh Sharma, and film journalists Roshmila Bhattacharya and Sathya Saran. The discussion, moderated by film journalist Ratnottama Sengupta, explored Dutt’s life, work, and enduring relevance.

Panelists highlighted Dutt’s innovative filmmaking techniques, his commentary on social hypocrisy in nascent India, and the significant influence of Urdu poetry on his work. Ramesh Sharma emphasized Dutt’s bold experimentation and his ability to sculpt films through innovative use of lenses and lighting, describing him as a social commentator who questioned the country’s moral compass.

Moinak Biswas discussed the context of Dutt’s emergence in the 1950s, a pivotal era for Indian cinema marked by new performance styles, cinematography, and screenwriting. He noted the influx of talent from the Indian People’s Theatre Association and the Progressive Writers Association, with whom Dutt collaborated closely.

Sathya Saran, author of ‘Ten Years With Guru Dutt’, spoke about Dutt’s complex relationship with Abrar Alvi, who scripted and/or directed several of Dutt’s famous films, highlighting the lack of acknowledgement Alvi received for his contributions.

Shoma A Chatterji focused on the emotional strength and complexity of female characters in Dutt’s films, emphasizing the humanistic portrayal of heroines. Roshmila Bhattacharya shared anecdotes about Dutt’s personal life, noting the deep melancholy and emotional complexities those close to him associated him with.

In addition to the talk, a photographic exhibition celebrating Guru Dutt and other film personalities with centenary tributes is ongoing at Gaganendra Shilpa Pradarshashala within the Nandan premises as part of KIFF. The festival continues to honor Dutt’s cinematic contributions, ensuring his legacy endures for generations to come.
