ICE Agents Question US Citizen in Illinois, Sparking Outrage
PARK RIDGE, IL – An Indian-origin US citizen working for the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) was questioned about his immigration status by masked ICE agents while on duty near Park Ridge, Illinois. The incident, which took place during a construction project, has drawn strong condemnation from Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, who called it an alarming instance of racial profiling.
According to reports, the agents also inquired about Zohran Mamdani, NYC’s new mayoral elect. Mamdani recently made history as NYC’s first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage and the first born in Africa.
“I am appalled they would stop and question a state employee working hard on the job to help improve our state’s roads and infrastructure,” Pritzker said in a statement. “Our state employees should be able to go to work and do their jobs without masked agents targeting them for no legitimate reason.”
The incident prompted concern among local residents, with Park Ridge-Niles School District 64 issuing an advisory urging students and teachers to remain indoors.
The Department of Homeland Security has denied reports of ICE agents patrolling the Park Ridge area.
The incident comes amid increased national scrutiny of ICE activities, fueled by Donald Trump’s renewed focus on immigration enforcement and deportations. Trump, when asked if ICE raids have gone too far, stated, “No, I think they haven’t gone far enough because we’ve been held back by the judges, by the liberal judges that were put in by Biden and by Obama.” Trump’s stance has sparked widespread protests and accusations of rights violations, particularly in Democratic-leaning cities targeted by ICE surges.
