“Wicked: One Wonderful Night” Celebrates Musical Phenomenon with Star-Studded Special
NEW YORK, NY – March 28, 2025 – NBC aired “Wicked: One Wonderful Night” last night, a special dedicated to the blockbuster “Wicked” franchise, drawing both praise and playful critique. The special, a celebration of the musical’s enduring popularity and recent film adaptations, featured a 37-piece orchestra, cast members from both “Wicked” films, and original Broadway stars Kristen Chenoweth and Idina Menzel.
While some viewers noted the heavy presence of “Wicked”-themed advertising, the program largely succeeded in showcasing the magic of the musical. The highlight of the night was a special performance of “For Good” featuring Chenoweth, Menzel, and the stars of the recent film adaptation, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, accompanied by composer Stephen Schwartz. The performance, a blended rendition of old and new, drew strong emotional reactions from the audience and online viewers.
Grande and Erivo, who scored acting nominations for their work in last year’s “Wicked” film, brought a fresh and emotional take to the beloved song. The film adaptation became the highest-grossing film based on a Broadway musical, earning 10 Oscar nominations and winning for best achievement in production design and costume design.
The special also served as a teaser for the upcoming film, “Wicked: For Good,” set to release in theaters on November 21.
