Massive Fire Ravages Rithala Slum, Kills One, Injures Another
New Delhi, November 9, 2025 – A devastating fire tore through a slum near the Rithala metro station in northwest Delhi on Friday night, leaving one dead, another injured, and hundreds homeless. The blaze, which erupted around 10:56 PM, quickly spread, reducing an estimated 500 shanties to ashes.
The deceased has been identified as Munna, 30. Rajesh, also 30, sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Safdarjung Hospital.
According to Delhi Fire Services (DFS), the fire was fueled by multiple exploding LPG cylinders, causing widespread panic among residents attempting to salvage their belongings.
“The situation was chaotic,” said a DFS official. “The fire spread rapidly due to the proximity of the huts, and the exploding cylinders further exacerbated the situation.”
Twenty-five fire tenders were dispatched to the scene and battled the inferno for six hours before finally extinguishing it. Police have cordoned off the area and launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including negligent conduct with combustible materials and causing death by negligence. Forensic and crime teams are assisting in the investigation.
An eyewitness reported that the fire originated in a single hut before quickly spreading to adjacent structures. The affected area has been sealed off to prevent further damage.
