Sat Nov 08 23:47:00 UTC 2025: ## Ambattur Residents Demand Safer Roads Near Schools
CHENNAI – Residents of Ambattur are calling for improved road safety measures, including more speed breakers, medians, and pedestrian signals, particularly in school zones along busy arterial roads like Ambattur-Red Hills Road. Concerns are mounting over the increasing number of accidents in these areas, despite the presence of “school zone” signboards.
The Ambattur-Red Hills Road is a crucial artery connecting several rapidly developing areas, leading to increased commercial activity and heavy traffic. Members of the United Welfare Associations, Ambattur, have highlighted the stretch from Oragadam junction to Puzhal, which is home to numerous educational institutions, as particularly dangerous. Association President S. Suresh pointed out that the area near Pudur is prone to accidents due to speeding vehicles and dense traffic, despite being marked as a school zone.
Residents are also requesting a median on Karukku Main Road and for interior roads to be relaid at the same level as the main roads to prevent waterlogging. S. Raghuraman, a resident of Venkatapuram, noted the Karukku Main Road is often congested due to encroachments, causing significant delays during peak hours.
Responding to these concerns, Ambattur MLA Joseph Samuel stated that he would discuss the need for additional safety measures with the State Highways department and the police. He also mentioned that a proposal to widen the Karukku Main Road is currently under review by the Greater Chennai Corporation. The residents hope that swift action will be taken to ensure the safety of schoolchildren and pedestrians in Ambattur.
