Mumbai, India – 2002 was a year of stark contrasts in Hindi cinema, showcasing both the grandeur of traditional Bollywood and the rise of gritty, realistic crime dramas. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s lavish adaptation of “Devdas,” starring Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Madhuri Dixit, dominated headlines with its opulent sets and extravagant costumes. At the same time, Ram Gopal Varma’s “Company,” a spiritual successor to his critically acclaimed “Satya,” redefined the gangster genre with its realistic portrayal of the Mumbai underworld.
“Devdas,” while visually stunning and boasting stellar performances, was criticized for being overlong and melodramatic. Despite a glamorous premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, the film’s flaws were apparent to many.
In contrast, “Company,” starring Vivek Oberoi, Ajay Devgn, and Mohanlal, was lauded for its realistic and engaging depiction of the rivalry between real-life mobsters Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Rajan. The film was a commercial success and solidified Ram Gopal Varma’s reputation as a master of the crime genre.
2002 also saw the emergence of Vishal Bhardwaj with “Makdee,” a children’s film that showcased his talent for atmospheric storytelling and paved the way for his later successes like “Maqbool.”
Meanwhile, in Maharashtra, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar denies involvement in his son’s land deal and welcomes the probe ordered by CM Fadnavis. He has given instructions to not do anything wrong and will not support any unlawful actions using his name. The District Collector has suspended the tehsildar and the sale deed will be cancelled. Officials involved in the deal will face action for their mistake.
The diverse offerings of 2002 highlight the dynamic nature of Bollywood, showcasing its ability to embrace both spectacle and substance. While filmmakers like Bhansali continue to create grand, operatic experiences, others like Varma push the boundaries of realism, reflecting the complexities of Indian society.
