SZA Addresses Kendrick-Drake Beef and Nicki Minaj Feud: “Why Would I Insert Myself?”
R&B star SZA is steering clear of drama, explaining her decision to remain neutral in the recent Kendrick Lamar-Drake feud. In a GQ cover story, she stated, “It was something between two grown-ass men, so why would I insert myself?” SZA emphasized her close relationships with both artists, noting her signing to Kendrick’s label, TDE, and her long-standing rapport with Drake. She also defended her decision to perform her collaboration with Drake, “Rich Baby Daddy,” on tour alongside Kendrick, pointing out that their past collaboration “Poetic Justice” was also on the setlist. “I don’t know why I wouldn’t be celebrating some shit that I ate up,” she said.
Regarding her brief online exchange with Nicki Minaj earlier this year, SZA downplayed the situation, stating, “I don’t know her…There’s no backstory.” The feud arose after Minaj criticized SZA’s songwriting, prompting SZA to post a screenshot suggesting Minaj had previously sought a collaboration. SZA now seems uninterested in engaging further, particularly as Minaj has redirected her criticism towards Jay-Z. SZA concluded that she’s learning to “give up” as she gets older, implying she’s not interested in these types of public feuds.
