Kerala High Court Orders Crackdown on Pollution at Sabarimala
KOCHI, India – November 7, 2025 – The Kerala High Court has issued a directive to the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) to implement stringent measures aimed at curbing pollution at the Sabarimala temple during the upcoming Mandalam-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season. The ruling, announced today, calls for a ban on the sale of shampoo in plastic sachets and chemical kumkum, citing their detrimental impact on the environment.
The court’s decision follows a suo motu petition sparked by a report from the Sabarimala Special Commissioner, which highlighted the necessity of improved facilities for pilgrims. In addition to the ban on polluting products, the TDB and other stakeholders are instructed to ensure the availability of potable water, clean and safe resting shelters, and well-maintained toilets for pilgrims at Sannidhanam and surrounding areas.
The court emphasized the importance of public awareness, ordering the TDB to issue advance notices through its official website and media channels regarding the ban on plastic materials, including packaging, within the Irumudi offering. This advisory will also be featured on the Virtual-Q platform.
Concerns were raised during the hearing regarding the pollution of the Valiyathodu stream due to plastic waste, impacting water quality and aquatic life. The court directed the Minor Irrigation department to conduct an immediate site inspection and remove silt and sand deposits that are obstructing the water flow.
The Devaswom Commissioner has been instructed to file a consolidated report detailing the specific steps taken to implement the court’s directives, ensuring a cleaner and more sustainable pilgrimage experience for devotees.
