Disney Channels Go Dark on YouTube TV After Contract Dispute
Millions of YouTube TV subscribers are without access to popular Disney-owned channels like ESPN, ABC, FX, and National Geographic after a contract renewal deal between Disney and Google-owned YouTube TV fell through on October 31st. The blackout impacts roughly 10 million subscribers, including those relying on the service to watch live sports, most notably “Monday Night Football.”
The impasse leaves viewers scrambling for alternatives. Disney is directing subscribers to other streaming services like Hulu + Live TV, Sling, Fubo, and traditional cable/satellite providers like Cox, Dish, DirecTV, Fios, Mediacom, Optimum, Spectrum TV and Xfinity.
Several platforms are offering incentives to lure disgruntled YouTube TV customers. For example, customers who purchased select Samsung TVs are eligible for free ESPN Unlimited for one year. While Disney+ and ESPN+ don’t offer standalone free trials, Disney offers bundles including all three services (Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+) starting at $12.99/month.
Fubo offers packages with live TV and ESPN Unlimited starting at $54.99/month for the first month, then $84.99/month. Sling’s Orange and Blue combined plan, which includes ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3 and Fox, is $29.99 in the first month, then $60/month. ESPN Unlimited is $29.99/month or $299.99/year, while ESPN Select is $12.99/month or $129.99/year.
Negotiations between the two media giants are ongoing, but for now, viewers will need to explore these alternative avenues to access their favorite Disney content.
