BJP Accused of Centralizing Panjab University, Erasing Punjab’s Influence
Chandigarh – November 4, 2025 – Former Punjab Health Minister and senior Congress leader Balbir Singh Sidhu has strongly criticized the BJP-led Central government’s decision to restructure the Syndicate and Senate of Panjab University, calling it an act of “anti-Punjab” sentiment.
Sidhu alleges that the restructuring, ostensibly aimed at improving the university’s functionality, effectively eliminates the representation of teachers, principals, and alumni, transforming the governing bodies into nominated entities directly controlled by the Central government.
“This historic institution of Punjab is now ‘Panjab University’ in name only,” Sidhu stated, “as in practice, it has been turned into a fully central university.” He further accused the BJP of seeking to diminish Punjab’s influence in institutions, similar to actions taken at the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB).
Sidhu also criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, claiming their “lack of commitment towards Punjab and Punjabis” emboldened the Central government to take this step.
The move is likely to fuel further political tensions between the Congress and BJP, with concerns raised about the autonomy and regional representation within Panjab University.
