Mon Nov 03 12:10:00 UTC 2025: ## San Marcos Rocked by Shooting, Academic Freedom Concerns at Texas State

San Marcos, TX – San Marcos is grappling with a wave of unsettling events, including a fatal shooting downtown and growing concerns over academic freedom at Texas State University.

On [Date – Implied: Nov. 2], around 10 p.m., three people were shot near Kissing Alley on The Square in San Marcos. San Marcos Police Department (SMPD) reported one victim died and the other two were transported to the hospital. Authorities are searching for two Black male suspects. One was wearing a black hoodie with white letters, dark pants and dark shoes while the other was wearing a two tone jacket (black over light gray), dark pants and a beanie. They are believed to have fled in a four-door, silver or grey Audi A3. SMPD has recovered the vehicle and is continuing to investigate. All bars on The Square were asked to close following the incident, and the public was urged to avoid the area.

The shooting is the second recent shooting incident in San Marcos, following one on Post Road.

Meanwhile, Texas State University is facing scrutiny over academic freedom. The university recently terminated a history professor after a court-ordered temporary reinstatement. This decision, along with other administrative actions, has led guest lecturers to withdraw from speaking engagements, citing concerns about the state of academic freedom within the institution.

The Senate Advisory Group has reportedly questioned President Damphousse and the Provost regarding academic freedom and due process. These concerns are compounded by a recent Texas State University System (TSUS) order to conduct course audits, following a statewide crackdown on LGBTQ+ related courses.

The University Star, Texas State’s student newspaper, also reports that the university will make a decision on the reinstatement of the terminated history professor.

In addition to these events, a Tornado Warning was issued for San Marcos and parts of Hays County [Date Implied], further adding to the ongoing challenges facing the community.

Anyone with information about the shooting suspects is urged to contact SMPD at 512-753-2108.
