South Central Railway Set to Enhance Train Services with Third-Line Projects
Hyderabad, November 3, 2025 – The South Central Railway (SCR) is poised to significantly improve train services across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Maharashtra as it enters the final stages of completing three major third-line railway projects. These upgrades are expected to alleviate congestion, increase train speeds, and allow for more frequent services on some of the busiest routes in the region.
The most ambitious of these projects is the ₹1,952 crore Vijayawada-Kazipet third-line, spanning 219 kilometers. This vital corridor, which sees heavy passenger and freight traffic destined for eastern and southern India, is nearing completion with only 41 kilometers remaining to be finished between Mahabubabad and Khammam.
Another significant project is the ₹2,063 crore Kazipet-Balharshah section, covering 205 kilometers along the congested Grand Trunk route. Approximately 18 kilometers still needs to be built.
The ₹3,246 crore Vijayawada–Gudur third-line, also on the Grand Trunk route, is almost finished. Only 7 km between Krishna Canal and Pedavadlapudi are remaining to be completed.
In addition to these near-complete projects, SCR has several other third-line projects in the pipeline, including the Duvvada–Vijayawada and Gudur–Renigunta lines. The Secunderabad–Wadi project includes construction of third and fourth lines and is expected to be completed in five years.
“These infrastructure upgrades are critical for modernizing our railway network and meeting the growing demand for passenger and freight transport,” said A. Sridhar, CPRO, SCR. “We anticipate significant improvements in efficiency and service reliability upon completion of these projects.”
