Mon Nov 03 11:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Houston Airports Brace for Increased Wait Times Due to Government Shutdown
HOUSTON – Travelers flying in and out of Houston’s Bush Intercontinental and Hobby airports are warned to expect significantly longer security wait times as the government shutdown impacts staffing levels. The Houston Airport System announced on Saturday that lines are already increasing, and by Sunday, officials cautioned that wait times could exceed 90 minutes at Bush and 60 minutes at Hobby.
The shutdown has led to staffing shortages at the TSA and among air traffic controllers, with the latter experiencing increased sick calls. As a result, only security lines in Terminals A and E will be open at Bush Airport.
“It’s an impact. We want to get home. It’s tough, I don’t like to wait, but we want to get home,” said James Barnes, whose flight was delayed by an hour. “I feel bad for the employees that are working for the TSA. It’s not just here — it’s everywhere.”
United Airlines passengers will need to check their bags in Terminal C before proceeding to Terminal E for security. While some travelers have so far avoided major disruptions, others expressed concern about future travel plans.
“We’re going to Finland for Christmas. We’re concerned not only with the TSA and air traffic control, but with international travel in general,” said traveler Cindy Cuellar.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has warned that Thanksgiving travel could be a “disaster” if the shutdown persists. In the meantime, passengers are urged to arrive early and allow extra time for security screening at both airports until further notice.
