Indian National Kidnapped by Militia in War-Torn Sudan
New Delhi, India – An Indian man has been kidnapped by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia in Sudan, where a violent conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) has been raging since 2023. Adarsh Behera, 36, from Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district, was abducted from the city of Al Fashir, the last government stronghold, and is believed to be held in Nyala, an RSF stronghold.
A disturbing video obtained by NDTV shows Behera flanked by RSF soldiers, one of whom asks, “Do you know Shah Rukh Khan?” while another prompts him to say, “Dagalo good,” referring to RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemeti.
Behera’s family, who confirmed he has been working at a plastic factory in Sudan since 2022, has shared a video of him pleading for help. “I am here in Al Fashir where the situation is very bad… My family and children are very worried. I request the state (Odisha) government to help me,” he says in the video.
The RSF’s recent capture of Al Fashir after an 18-month siege has been marked by violence. The International Criminal Court has warned that their actions in the region, including reports of mass killings and rapes, could constitute war crimes.
“We hope that he will be treated well. And we hope that we can see him coming back safely soon,” Sudan Ambassador to India Dr Mohammed Abdalla Ali Eltom told NDTV.
Communication with Al Fashir has been completely cut off, raising concerns for Behera’s safety. The conflict between the SAF and RSF continues, with recent clashes in Khartoum and North Darfur. The Indian government has yet to release an official statement.
