Ernie Clement: From Waiver Wire to World Series Hero, Chasing History

The Sporting News

TORONTO – Ernie Clement, the 29-year-old utility infielder, has become an unlikely hero for the Toronto Blue Jays this postseason. After being let go by both Cleveland and Oakland, Clement found a home in Toronto in 2023 and has since emerged as a key player as the Blue Jays face the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 7 of the World Series on Saturday night.

Clement, originally from Brighton, New York, was a standout athlete in both baseball and hockey before becoming a national champion at the University of Virginia. Drafted by Cleveland, he bounced around before landing in Toronto, where he’s thriving.

This season, Clement has showcased his versatility, earning Gold Glove nominations at both third base and as a utility player. He’s played every infield position and even spent time in centerfield in college.

Adding to his impressive run, Clement is currently riding a 12-game hitting streak in the playoffs, tying Pat Borders’ franchise record from the 1992 World Series. A hit in Game 7 would give him the record outright and could cement his place in Blue Jays history if it leads to a championship.
