Sun Nov 02 02:00:00 UTC 2025: Denny Hamlin Seeks Elusive Championship in Phoenix Finale
AVONDALE, Ariz. – Denny Hamlin, a three-time Daytona 500 winner and widely regarded as NASCAR’s best driver without a championship, is poised to finally seize the title in Sunday’s winner-take-all finale at Phoenix Raceway. Hamlin secured the pole position, giving him a significant advantage heading into the race.
The Joe Gibbs Racing veteran will battle teammate Chase Briscoe, along with Hendrick Motorsports rivals William Byron and Kyle Larson, for the coveted Cup Series championship. Hamlin, who led the series with six wins this season, enters the race with a relaxed and focused demeanor, a stark contrast to his past championship appearances.
“I think the benefit was winning in Vegas because I was able to get so much work done before this week,” Hamlin said, referring to his milestone 60th career victory that locked him into the championship race.
While Hamlin’s dominant performance this weekend has fueled excitement, he remains wary of past disappointments. “You can only help the things that you can control,” he acknowledged, referencing his several past losses for the championship.
Larson, the only former champion in the field, and Byron qualified second and third, respectively. Briscoe will start further back after an uncharacteristic qualifying run.
Many in the NASCAR community are pulling for Hamlin to break through and claim his first championship. Both Larson and Briscoe acknowledged Hamlin’s career and the positive reception his victory would receive.
Hamlin’s pursuit of the title carries extra weight, as he desperately wants his father, who is battling a serious health issue, to witness his potential victory. He acknowledged that Sunday will be his last chance for his dad to witness his championship if he wins.
