Sat Nov 01 15:00:00 UTC 2025: ## De Kock’s Enigmatic Return: The Proteas Star Back for More, But Why?

Johannesburg, South Africa – Quinton de Kock is back in the Proteas squad, but the reason for his return to international cricket remains shrouded in mystery. During a recent press conference, the 32-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman offered few concrete answers, stating simply that he “missed representing the country” and the camaraderie of the team.

De Kock, who last played for South Africa in the T20 World Cup final in June 2024, cited a renewed appreciation for his “childhood dream” of playing for the Proteas after his hiatus. He also expressed excitement about playing alongside a younger generation of players and a new coaching staff.

“It’s been cool being back and just trying to find my feet,” he said. “I’m making some new friends, and there’s a new style within the team.”

However, the true motivation behind his return remains elusive. Many players miss the spotlight and camaraderie after retirement, but few actively seek a return to the international stage. When asked about his decision, De Kock offered no in-depth explanation, leading to speculation that his motivation may be purely emotional.

Coach Shukri Conrad described De Kock as “cricket’s equivalent package of puzzles,” echoing Winston Churchill’s famous quote about Russia. This sentiment was further reinforced by De Kock’s candid admission that he rarely watches cricket, even during significant moments for the national women’s team.

Despite the ambiguity surrounding his return, De Kock expressed a desire to play for the Proteas for as long as possible, with the aim of participating in future World Cups. He acknowledged the need to perform well to secure his place in the team and is keen to mentor the younger players.

“When I started playing for the Proteas one of the big guys I stuck close to was Dale Steyn,” he said. “He taught me lessons that really helped my career… If I make an impact on their careers, great.”

De Kock’s return marks a new chapter in his career, as he transitions from being a young player to one of the senior figures in the squad. Whether his motivation stems from a longing for the past or a desire to shape the future, one thing is clear: Quinton de Kock remains an enigma, on and off the field.

He will be looking to find form in the upcoming T20I series against Pakistan, starting in Lahore.
