Former Cuban Economy Minister Charged with Espionage, Financial Crimes

Havana, Cuba – Former Cuban Economy Minister Alejandro Gil has been formally charged with espionage and a slew of financial crimes following a nearly two-year investigation, the Attorney General’s office announced Friday. Gil, who served as Minister of Economy and Planning from 2019 until his dismissal in February 2024, faces accusations of engaging in “espionage, acts detrimental to economic activity or contracting, embezzlement, bribery,” among other offenses.

While the Attorney General’s office detailed the charges, it remained silent on which nation or entity may have benefitted from Gil’s alleged activities. Additional charges include forgery of public documents, tax evasion, influence peddling, money laundering, violation of rules on classified documents, and theft or damage of official documents.

The charges against Gil, once considered a close ally of President Miguel Diaz-Canel, carry severe penalties under Cuban law, ranging from 10 years in prison to the death penalty. Gil spearheaded Cuba’s major monetary reform in 2021, a move intended to unify the country’s currency system and address economic challenges. However, the policies coincided with a period of soaring inflation and economic instability in Cuba.

Since the investigation began, Gil has not made any public statements and has remained out of the public eye. No trial date has been set.
