Vince Gilligan Returns with Mind-Bending Apple TV+ Drama, “Pluribus,” Exploring a World Where Only One Woman Rejects Universal Happiness
Albuquerque, NM – From the mind that brought us “Breaking Bad,” Vince Gilligan is set to premiere his highly anticipated Apple TV+ series, “Pluribus,” on November 7th. Filmed primarily in and around Albuquerque, a city that has become Gilligan’s artistic home, “Pluribus” takes on a grand scale, posing profound philosophical questions about humanity’s relationship with happiness and the cost of contentment.
The series stars Rhea Seehorn ( “Better Call Saul”) as Carol, a successful author who finds herself the sole dissenting voice in a world suddenly overtaken by inexplicable peace and happiness. A mysterious signal from outer space has seemingly eradicated conflict and self-loathing from almost everyone on Earth, creating a utopian existence that Carol vehemently rejects.
“Pluribus” grapples with themes of free will, individuality, and the value of unhappiness. It subtly references classic dystopian tales like “Brave New World” and “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” while also forging its own unique path. Gilligan aims to challenge viewers by exploring whether an existence devoid of struggle is truly desirable, even if it offers universal contentment.
Apple TV+ has already committed to two seasons of “Pluribus,” signaling its confidence in Gilligan’s vision. The series boasts a significant budget, as demonstrated by its elaborate sets and high production value. Yet, as the television landscape shifts away from big-budget, creator-driven series, “Pluribus” also represents a gamble.
For Gilligan, “Pluribus” is a deeply personal project. The series is the culmination of years of pondering the nature of happiness and the driving force behind his own creative pursuits. “This general level of unhappiness and this dissatisfaction that I’ve learned to live with is what gets me up in the morning,” Gilligan said. “It’s what gets me to achieve.”
“Pluribus” premieres on Apple TV+ on November 7th.
