Tamil Nadu CM Appeals to Center for Increased Fertilizer Supply Amid Anticipated Bumper Harvest

CHENNAI, October 29, 2025 – Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has appealed to Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers J.P. Nadda to increase the allocation of fertilizers to the state, citing expectations of a significant increase in agricultural activity during the upcoming Samba (early Rabi) season.

In a letter dated October 28, 2025, Stalin highlighted the success of the recent Kuruvai (Kharif) season, attributing it to state government initiatives like the ₹215 crore special package for paddy cultivators and timely dam openings. He anticipates a surge in paddy cultivation due to the favorable northeast monsoon and ample water reserves. Farmers are also expected to increase cultivation of other key crops like maize, blackgram, greengram, groundnut, and sugarcane.

This increased agricultural activity will lead to a higher demand for fertilizers, especially Urea, in November. The state has requested 6.94 LMT of Urea, 1.93 LMT of DAP, 1.88 LMT of MOP, and 5.15 LMT of NPK Complex fertilizers. However, the current allocation from the central government stands at 6.5 LMT of Urea, 1.5 LMT of DAP, 1.8 LMT of MOP, and 5.14 LMT of NPK Complex fertilizers.

“We urge the Union Minister to consider the State’s proposal and ensure the timely supply of fertilizers by companies to meet the farmers’ requirements,” stated Chief Minister Stalin in his letter. He also expressed gratitude to Minister Nadda for ensuring adequate fertilizer availability during the previous Kharif season.

The timely and sufficient supply of fertilizers is crucial to capitalize on the favorable weather conditions and maintain the momentum of increased agricultural production in Tamil Nadu.
