Conflicting Reports Emerge from Eastern Ukraine as Fighting Rages On; Trump Urges Putin to End War

Kyiv/Moscow/Washington – October 28, 2025 – Day 1,342 of Russia’s war on Ukraine saw continued fighting and conflicting reports regarding territorial control, alongside escalating rhetoric and diplomatic maneuvering.

The Russian Ministry of Defence announced on Tuesday that its forces had captured the village of Yehorivka in the Dnipropetrovsk region of Ukraine. However, Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform swiftly countered, reporting that Ukrainian troops had successfully expelled Russian forces from the same village. Al Jazeera was unable to independently verify either claim. Russia also claimed the capture of Novomykolaivka and Privolnoye in the Zaporizhia region, according to state news agency TASS.

Meanwhile, tensions ratcheted up on the international stage. US President Donald Trump directly addressed Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging him to end the war in Ukraine and cease nuclear weapons testing. Trump stated that Washington had positioned a nuclear submarine off the Russian coast, a clear response to Putin’s announcement a day earlier that Russia had successfully tested its nuclear-powered Burevestnik cruise missile.

On the diplomatic front, North Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs Choe Son Hui met with Putin at the Kremlin on Monday to discuss strengthening cooperation between the two nations. According to North Korean state media KCNA, discussions centered around future projects to solidify the bilateral relationship. Choe also conveyed North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s “brotherly regard” to Putin. In return, Putin asked Choe to assure Kim that “everything was going to plan,” during their meeting.

The ongoing conflict and increasing international involvement paint a complex picture of the war in Ukraine, with no clear end in sight.
