Tue Oct 28 10:40:00 UTC 2025: PayPal Partners with OpenAI to Integrate Digital Wallet into ChatGPT for Seamless Shopping
SAN FRANCISCO – PayPal has struck a deal with OpenAI to integrate its digital wallet into ChatGPT, enabling users to seamlessly purchase items discovered through the popular AI tool. The agreement, announced exclusively to CNBC, positions PayPal as a key player in the burgeoning field of AI-powered commerce.
Starting next year, both PayPal users and merchants will be able to leverage the integration. Consumers can use the “Buy with PayPal” button within ChatGPT to purchase items, while merchants can list their inventory directly on the platform. According to PayPal CEO Alex Chriss, this partnership will give “hundreds of millions of loyal PayPal wallet holders” a safe and secure checkout experience within ChatGPT.
This move makes PayPal an early adopter of OpenAI’s e-commerce ambitions. OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT’s use for e-commerce. Last month, OpenAI said its users could buy from Shopify and Etsy merchants, and two weeks ago it announced an e-commerce deal with Walmart.
PayPal will also handle crucial back-end processes for merchants selling on ChatGPT, including payment validation and routing, simplifying the process for sellers. Chriss emphasized the security benefits of the integration, highlighting that both consumers and merchants using PayPal have been verified, reducing the risk of fraud. Customers will be able to use linked bank accounts, credit cards, or stored balances for purchases, with the added protection of package tracking and dispute resolution.
“It’s a whole new paradigm for shopping,” said Chriss. “It’s hard to imagine that agentic commerce isn’t going to be a big part of the future.”
PayPal is actively positioning itself as a payments infrastructure provider for AI-driven shopping, having recently announced partnerships with Google and AI firm Perplexity. In addition to the OpenAI integration, PayPal announced it will be expanding its internal use of OpenAI’s enterprise AI products to accelerate its product development cycles.
