Tue Oct 28 14:40:47 UTC 2025: ## Summary:
The Mizo National Front (MNF), the main opposition party in Mizoram, has called for a 10-hour shutdown across the state on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, to protest the extension of the Forest (Conservation) Amendment Act (FCAA), 2023. The shutdown, excluding the Mamit district due to an upcoming bypoll, will halt normal activities, including government and private offices, educational institutions, and transportation. The MNF argues that the FCAA hurts the sentiments of the Mizo people and could allow the central government to take over land belonging to indigenous people. The People’s Conference party and the Joint Civil Society Mizoram (CJM) are supporting the shutdown and urging public participation. The Mizoram Assembly adopted a resolution to extend the FCAA this year, reversing its previous stance.

Mizoram Faces Shutdown as Opposition Protests Forest Act Extension
Aizawl, October 28, 2025 – The Mizo National Front (MNF), Mizoram’s primary opposition party, has announced a 10-hour shutdown across the state, excluding Mamit district, scheduled for Wednesday, October 29, 2025. The shutdown is a protest against the extension of the Forest (Conservation) Amendment Act (FCAA), 2023.
MNF media secretary Lallenmawia Jongte stated that the shutdown, commencing at 6:00 AM and concluding at 4:00 PM, will affect all government and private offices, educational institutions, and businesses. Transportation will also be halted, although emergency services will be exempted.
The MNF’s opposition stems from concerns that the FCAA, recently adopted by the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) government, allows the central government to encroach on land belonging to indigenous communities under the guise of “strategic linear projects of national importance.”
“The adoption of FCAA by the ZPM government had hurt the sentiment of the Mizos,” claimed MNF chief Zoramthanga.
The People’s Conference party and the Joint Civil Society Mizoram (CJM) have voiced their support for the MNF’s action, urging the public and other organizations to participate in the shutdown.
This protest follows a previous demonstration by the CJM on September 11, 2025, against the FCAA, highlighting growing unease within Mizoram regarding the potential impact of the amended legislation. The Mizoram Assembly had initially opposed the act but reversed its position during its monsoon session this year.
The shutdown is expected to cause significant disruption throughout Mizoram, raising tensions as the state navigates the contentious issue of land rights and conservation efforts.
