Iyer Stable After Spleen Injury During ODI, Yadav Confirms
CANBERRA – Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer is in stable condition and recovering well after suffering a lacerated spleen during the third and final One Day International (ODI) against Australia on Saturday. The injury occurred when Iyer, 30, landed awkwardly while completing a stunning catch to dismiss Alex Carey, a pivotal moment in India’s nine-wicket victory.
Iyer was immediately taken to a Sydney hospital for evaluation. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the laceration and assured fans that he is “medically stable and recovering well.” He remains hospitalized under close observation from medical teams in both Australia and India.
“We spoke to him,” Twenty20 captain Suryakumar Yadav told reporters on Tuesday ahead of India’s five-match T20 series against Australia. “When we got to know about his injury, I called him. Then I realised Shreyas doesn’t have his phone on him, and I called our physio, Kamlesh Jain, who told us he’s stable. He’s looking good [now]. We’ve been in touch for two days, he’s replying. If he’s able to reply on the phone, then he’s stable.”
The extent of the injury and timeframe for Iyer’s return to the field remain unclear. Iyer is a key member of the Indian squad, having scored 2,917 runs in 73 ODIs with an impressive average of 47.81. He is also the vice-captain of the ODI team. Iyer was ruled out from the T20 series against Australia.
While India secured a consolation victory in the final ODI, they lost the series 2-1. Their next ODI fixture is a home series against South Africa, commencing on November 30.
