Renton, WA – Magic: The Gathering is set to release a new series of “Secret Lair” drops, this time partnering with PlayStation to bring iconic characters and worlds from God of War, The Last of Us, Horizon, and Ghost of Tsushima to the popular card game. The announcement follows the success of June’s Final Fantasy set, solidifying Magic’s presence in the gaming crossover scene.
According to WOTC Art Director, Jacob Covey, part of the excitement for this collaboration comes from the mutual fandom between the two teams. “There’s usually a Magic fan or three on [the game studios’] side and a group of fans for their game on our team.”
IGN got an exclusive first look at the Atsu card from Ghost of Yotei, one of the protagonists featured in the upcoming PlayStation superdrop.
Sucker Punch Creative Director, Jason Connell, revealed that the collaboration has been a long time coming, with Wizards of the Coast initiating the partnership. Sucker Punch was heavily involved in the creation of the Ghost of Tsushima cards. They discussed key points of the game and provided materials to help the Magic team capture the essence of Jin Sakai’s world. The result is a set of cards that effectively translate Jin’s internal conflict between the samurai and the “Ghost” fighting styles into gameplay mechanics.
“Wizards of the Coast did a great job capturing this in the card with the Standoff ability, which represents his swordsmanship, while Ghost highlights his stealth and ability to strike fear into his opponents,” said Connell.
Senior Game Designer at WOTC, Annie Sardelis, said she struggled with making a set based on The Last of Us. “The hardest challenge I signed myself up for are the four Survivors Partners from The Last of Us series. It was tricky to find out how to generate the Fungus Zombie tokens on characters that canonically fight against them!”
The Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair x PlayStation Drop is scheduled to launch on October 27th at 9 AM PT on the official Secret Lair website.
