Mookie Betts Wins Roberto Clemente Award for Humanitarian Efforts

LOS ANGELES – Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts has been named the recipient of the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award, recognizing his outstanding character and dedication to community service. The award will be presented to Betts prior to Game 3 of the World Series at Dodger Stadium on Monday night.

Betts, an eight-time All-Star and former AL MVP, was nominated by the Dodgers for the annual honor that celebrates a Major League Baseball player who exemplifies sportsmanship, community involvement, philanthropy, and positive contributions both on and off the field.

Since founding the 5050 Foundation in 2021, Betts has focused on supporting underserved youth, providing resources for mental and emotional health, nutrition, financial literacy, and physical fitness. His dedication extends beyond his foundation. In January, he donated over $30,000 worth of Nike apparel to victims of the devastating Los Angeles wildfires. He also provided crucial financial aid and recovery resources to a family in Altadena who lost their home in the Eaton Fire.

Further demonstrating his commitment, Betts established an AAU basketball program and a baseball tournament in his hometown of Nashville, Tennessee. He has also contributed $160,000 to initiatives addressing hunger and homelessness, supported pediatric patients at UCLA Children’s Hospital and started various sports programs.

Betts follows in the footsteps of Dodgers teammate Clayton Kershaw, who won the award in 2012, and former teammate Justin Turner, who received the honor in 2022, cementing the Dodgers’ legacy of players dedicated to making a difference.
