BJP Criticizes Opposition Over Voter List Revision, Alleges Foul Play in West Bengal
New Delhi – October 28, 2025 – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a scathing attack on the opposition, including the Congress party, for their criticism of the Election Commission’s (EC) decision to conduct a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in 12 states and union territories.
BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla dismissed the opposition as a “herd of dissatisfied souls” and accused them of hypocrisy, pointing out that while they criticize the SIR as a means of vote stealing, some are demanding it in Maharashtra for upcoming local elections. Poonawalla further alleged that the opposition is using the SIR as an excuse for their anticipated losses in future polls.
Adding fuel to the fire, BJP IT cell in-charge Amit Malviya highlighted a significant bureaucratic reshuffle in West Bengal, questioning the timing and intent. He noted that the West Bengal government transferred a large number of officials, including District Magistrates, Additional District Magistrates, Sub-Divisional Officers, and Block Development Officers, shortly before the SIR announcement. Malviya claimed no other state had undertaken such a large-scale transfer before the revision and alleged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was strategically placing loyalists in districts with high numbers of illegal voters.
Malviya asserted that the BJP is closely monitoring the situation in West Bengal, stating the SIR will expose illegal Bangladeshi voters and remove fake entries used for fraudulent voting. The states and union territories where the SIR is being conducted are West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
The Congress party and the Election Commission of India have not yet issued statements in response to these accusations. The SIR is expected to be a contentious issue in the lead-up to upcoming elections.
